NAMHI is a national voluntary organisation working to promote the rights of people with intellectual disability in Ireland to ensure their full and equal participation in society. namhi was founded in 1961 and has become the co-ordinating body for over 160 organisations providing services and support to almost 28,000 people with intellectual disability in Ireland. namhi provides a central forum for its members to identify priorities and formulate nationally agreed policies to present to government, statutory bodies, other relevant groups as well as the general public.

Campaigns for changes
namhi campaigns for changes in services and legislation that will improve the quality of life and participation of people with intellectual disability in Irish Society. In addition to this central role, namhi provides an information and advice service on intellectual disability by phone, post and through its website publishes information leaflets/booklets on intellectual disability. namhi publishes a quarterly newsletter, organises seminars and conferences on intellectual disability and gives information talks to parents groups and others. It represents the intellectual disability sector in Ireland at an international level by its membership of Inclusion International and Inclusion Europe - one of the largest international nongovernmental organisations in the field of disability. Promoting research into intellectual disability namhi is a member of the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disability.

Umbrella Group
namhi is an umbrella group for organisations in the intellectual disability sector. Its members include: Parent and Friend associations and support groups. Voluntary organisations providing services to people with an intellectual disability: Trade unions. Professional bodies. Societies. Special interest groups. Affiliated organisations pay an annual fee based on the size of their membership or the number of persons for whom they provide support or services.
