Description
Heart Children, set up in 1990, is a parent support group for families of children with congenital heart defects. Congenital heart defects (CHD) affect one in every hundred children born at present. The majority of these babies are treated at Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, Dublin 12, which is the national centre for paediatric cardiology in the Irish Republic.

About half of all babies born with CHD will require surgery and at present about 300 open-heart operations are performed annually on children from one day old to teenagers.

Heart Children's Main Objective is to give support to parents and families of children born with CHD. Heart Children can offer support through a shared understanding and awareness of the problems and needs that a child with CHD can bring.

Services
Heart Children includes a self help group for bereaved parents and also caters for grown-up heart children. Help for parents of "Down's Syndrome" children is also available.

Heart Children has played a part in improving facilities for children with CHD within Our Lady's Hospital, Crumlin.
