Children in Hospital
Ireland is a voluntary organisation formed in 1970 to promote
the welfare of children in hospital. It seeks to increase the
awareness of the public, medical personnel, hospital management
committees, health boards and relevant government departments,
to the special needs of child patients. Children in Hospital
Ireland provides information, support and practical help for
both parents and hospitals.
Aims ans Objectives: Children in Hospital Ireland's aims and objectives are set out in the Children in Hospital Ireland publications "Charter for Children in Hospital" and "Guidelines for Welfare of Children in Hospital and Care of Adolescents in Hospital".
Steady progress has been made in the implementation of these aims. Much remains to be done however;
- Staff caring for sick children, should be specifically trained and fully aware of the child's emotional and developmental needs.
- No child should be cared for in adult ward.
- Every child in hospital should have full opportunity for play, recreation, and education.
- Adolescents should have a separate accommodation where common interests and problems are taken into account.
- Parents should be positively encouraged to be with their child in hospital at all times and to participate into account.
- In Accident and Emergency and OutPatients Units provision should be made for the special needs of child patients.
- If hospital admissions are to be cut down, community based services need to be extended.

Services
|
We support and help parents before, during and after their child's stay in hospital. We offer advice. We provide leaflets including;
- Ullmhaigh do Pháiste don Ospidéal
- Prepare Your Child for Hospital
- Information for Students
- Parent Advice Pack, containing detailed information on all aspects of a child's hospital visit.
We talk to parent groups, play-groups, trainee nurses and medical personnel. Our video "the Best Medicine", (25mins.) illustrates the importance of preparation and highlights situations which may be encountered by children and their parents during a stay in hospital. We organise hospital playgroups with voluntary helpers and provide equipment and toys where necessary.
We produce newsletters and a wide range of informative literature for the public, carry out surveys, initiate discussions with the Department of Health and other bodies responsible for sick children, and liaise with comparable organisations at home and abroad. |
