AIDS WEST is a voluntary organisation funded by the Western Health Board based in Galway. We offer an information help line, education / prevention services and support to people affected by HIV and to those concerned about their sexual health in counties Galway, Mayo and Roscommon. Our services are completely confidential. Aids West was formed in 1987 as Cairde with the aim of providing support to people with HIV/AIDS. Later it also took on the aims of providing education/prevention services and to lobby for service development. At that time there was little government or regional policy on HIV/AIDS and the organisation survived on the goodwill of a number of dedicated volunteers concerned about the situation.

Education Services: We provide interactive workshops, seminars and presentations tailored to meet the needs of particular groups. Our workshops focus on providing people with factual information on HIV and other STIs and how they are transmitted. They also address attitudes to relationships and sexuality, and examine how to make sexual behaviour safer.

Outreach Services: We are engaged in information outreach in pubs, clubs, community centres, health centres, libraries and colleges, giving information on AIDS WEST services and HIV / STI facts. Condoms are also distributed in appropriate venues.
