Tree Pollen Forecast

Wednesday, 14 May 2008

The irishhealth.com pollen and airborne allergen forecasts use data provided to us by the UK National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit's network.

These forecasts can assist people who suffer from asthma and allergic rhinitis to plan their activities. The forecasting service provides an index of the risk of being affected by airborne allergic pollens.

Low risk (0-40 grains/m3)
Moderate risk (41-80 grains/m3)
High risk (81-300 grains/m3)
Very High risk (>301 grains/m3)
Leinster

Risk of moderate tree pollen counts (oak and birch) when conditions are suitable.

Munster

Risk of moderate tree pollen counts (oak and birch) when conditions are suitable.

Connacht

Risk of moderate tree pollen counts (oak and birch) when conditions are suitable.

Ulster

Risk of moderate tree pollen counts (oak and birch) when conditions are suitable.

General Outlook: Thursday and Friday: Showers or showery outbreaks of rain are expected to edge into Munster and southern parts of Leinster, which will cause pollen counts to decrease locally. The best of the weather will be in the north. Birch pollen counts are generally decreasing as the end of the season approaches, and so mainly low to moderate birch pollen counts expected. The highest birch pollen risk will be in the north. Low to moderate oak pollen counts are also likely, particularly in southern and central areas where it remains dry for prolonged periods. Birch pollen affects about 25% of hay fever sufferers. Oak pollen affects about 20% of hay fever sufferers. Some early flowering grasses are starting to release their pollen and so low grass pollen counts are likely. It should be noted that low grass pollen counts could affect sensitive individuals. Rain will cause pollen counts to decrease.
