Why should the Irish drinks industry sponsor such events? The country is obsessed with drink, you can't seem to have a good time without is. I don't drink so it's easy for me to say that but sports events are attended by young and old and therefore, drinks ads are only encouraging young people and children to drink more or take up drinking. On televised events, be they Irish or internation, all you can see are drinks ads staring back at you. If they want to sponsor something, why can't it be to fund some addiction and counselling services.

NO definately not. Yes we know the drinks Co's make huge profits, but it could help a lot of young people if they did not advertise so much, also sponcering sport is wrong. We encourage our young people to partake in sport' and that should be it' why complicate things by giving the impression that alcohol is part of sport and part of life itself. Cop on people and let our young people grow up being aware of the important things in life, not in a constant haze due to alcohol. By the way I do take a drink myself, and I did'nt have my first drink until I was 20yrs old. I have a grownup family. but when I was growing up Parents gave good example and expected their children to respect this.

Of course drink shouldn't be sponsored for sport. It's a complete joke!

Why shouldn't they sponsor....yes understandable the drink culture in Ireland is a joke but regardless of there sponsorship people are still going to drink...they banned cigarette companies from advertising and it doesn't stop people smoking...so maybe if drink companies were to sponsor sports events it would put a lot of drink money back to people who need it. These companies are earning an absolute fortune off people, both young and old, so doesn't it make sense to pump some of that cash back to those of us who could benefit. Especially in to children's sports who need the finance.

The drinks industry will do anything to encourage us to think that drink and fun go together. Life is so much simpler if you do not drink alcohol. No more worrying about which wine to buy, is it safe to drive after a few beers in a pub, can one's liver take it and above all one's children will grow up aware that life is possible and normal without alcohol. How can one urge them not to drink and drive if they know that you do it. Try an alcohol free life - one can be perfectly happy without such a false friend!

No I think alcholic drinks and sports should not be linked. The government will never ban drink ads or drink ads for sporting events, though. There is too much revenue to be made from alcohol.

Maybe the drinks industry should be obliged to 'sponsor' sports and medical programmes with no return advertising...a form of 'precision taxation' because as Lily25 writes lots of people enjoy and will drink anyhow.

Alaistair, I like a drink and I don't find it complicates my life at all.
I never worry about which wine touy. If I'm buying it for home use - I simply buy the one we like. If I'm buying it for a host or hosytess, i buy the one I think they like.
I nevr worry if a few drinks will put me over the limit becuase I simply do not drink and drive.
ife an be perfectly simple with alcohol in it.

I like hurling, but that doesn't mean I'm going to go out and drink guinness just because they sponsor it. If they have the money, then let them put it back into sport. If we stop drink companies sponsorship, then where do we draw the line? What about a certain Irish fast food company that sponsor the Galway teams - their food will make you obese as will soft drinks laden with sugar. Mobile phones will fry your brain if you use them for them for too long. I don't think banning drink companies sponsoring events will reduce the alcohol consumption in this country, so as I said, let them put the money back into sport if they're prepared to do that.

The visitor obviously doesnt have much will power to suggest that people by seeing an advertisement will have to go out and drink themselves silly! I drink and I watch sport, occasionally i do both together. I have never drank or had the erge to drink Guinness during a hurling match though, even though Guinness hoarding can be seen everywhere. It is silly to even suggest that. We all watch tv, full of adverts, they merely inform us and one would have to be very suggestible and somewhat naive to purchase everything they saw an advert for. For alcohol tears families apart why shouldnt it make some recompense by sponsering events which bring families together. They have more money than most companies and so are infact good for sport.

Drinks industry must sponsor sporting events. This does not mean that we must drink. Alcohol abuse has nothing to do with drink industry sporting sponsor. Since creation alcohol ang drugs are present, and will be present everafter. Drinks industry by sposorin sports might give an alternative way of healthy life to youngsters, promoting spots.

yes the drinks industry gain a lot from sporting events so why not give something back. Sports benefit both spectators and participants and sponsorship is greatly appreciated.

Oh no Lima, you are WRONG WRONG WRONG. Drink affects the abuser, their spose, their family, their children, their community, their friends and their colleagues.

Does it really matter who sponsors sporting events? People are either going to respect alcohol or abuse it. Do you think if alka-seltzer sponsored events it would lead to an alcohol respecting society? I think not.
