I would like if information was posted on the effects of insufficient sleep which seems to be an issue for a significant number of people

I am constantly tired! I wake up every morning swearing I\'ll go to bed early that night, but never do. How to break the cycle?

There is some talk that the quality of your sleep is more important than the amount of it. I wonder is it possible to induce quality sleep and get the best value for your time asleep! I also read recently that lying on till mid-day, which school goers may do in summer is actually bad for your health?
Pleasant dreams.

I go to bed quite early (around 10.00pm and am up at 5.00 or 6.00pm. I sleep for almost all of that time, and think that keeping more or less the same times and not eating for a few hours before bedtime are the best ingredients for a good night's sleep.

They say that one needs less sleep as they get older and I feel its mostly true.My sleep is always broken by a visit to bathroom at 3 or 4 am. this wakes me up and its hard to get back to sleep. This didnt happen years ago but now Im in my sixties so I guess its downhill from now on.

I'm up at 7a.m. to get to work and rarely finish before 7.p.m. - which means getting home at 8.30pm. I can't get to sleep before midnight, that means I HAVE to catch up on sleep on Saturday morning. This is not laziness, it's sleep deficit which has to be paid back. If not I find myself wanting to fall asleep behind the wheel on the way home the following week.

I get around 7 hours sleep average, but I feel much better if I get 8 hours sleep, but I wouldn´t be able to sleep over 8 hours and if I do, I feel worse, I feel as if I´ve only slept 6 hours!!

I go to be around 11.30 pm and I'm always fast asleep within five minutes. I literally have to be pulled out in the morning (c. 7.00am) by my husband. I drink coffee before I go to be, sometimes I have a toasted sandwich - makes no difference. Once my head hits that pillow, I'm gone. My sister, on the other hand has to take sleeping pills every night, and even they don't work sometimes. I think you're just a good sleeper or you're not...

I get about 6 hours sleep. I'm working full time and studying by night so it's hard to fit sleep in and get everything done. I'm lucky because I live near work and college and walk or cycle most places. Sometimes I'm tired and oversleep on Sundays but I think the exercise keeps me healthy.
I really feel sorry for those who have two hour commutes to and from work and have to leave the house before 7am and don't get home until after 7pm. That kind of stress plus lack of sleep is very unhealthy.
People are working longer hours which contributes to less sleep. This is a vicious circle, because if people work a 40 hour week and get proper sleep, they will get more done more effectively than if they work a 60 hour week on inadequate sleep.

i wish that i never had to sleep, if i could plug into a socket and recharge in an hour, i would be happy, every hour that your sleep is an hour lost forever. think about it, you only live once, and every hour asleep is lost forever. so stay awake and dont loose out on life.

If you don't sleep you'll loose out on quality of life to a tremendous extent and put your halth under enourmous strain. The boby needs between 6 and 8 hours sleep (sometimes more) a night in order to repair its vital functions. A deficit in sleep is like a deficit in anything else. It has to be paid back. Lack of sleep and dehydration are two of the biggest enemies of the immune system

I'm so tired, I just can't sleep, I've tried everything, sleeping pills, drinks, no drinks, herbal teas, baths, valerian the lot. I might get only about six hours and that's it, i feel like i need more. I exercise too. Any other suggestions?

Sometimes I get six hours, sometimes seven, or eight hours sleep but then I do sometimes go to bed at 12.30 or 1.00am.
I'm in the fortunate position of being retired and if I feel tired I drop off to sleep in the afternoon while watching tv almost without realising it, for an hour or two and feel refreshed afterwards.
I feel tremendous sympathy for all those people who have to be on the road at all hours of the morning and don't arrive home until about twelve hours later.

It depends on what my schedule of things to do is like for the next day. I am retired, and my Spouse is also.
On average, 9 or 10 hours.

Oooh Patti, I'm jealous! :-). I'm up at a quarter to six each working day so to get even seven and a half hours sleep on a work night is an acheivement. I just end up catching up at weekends.

Hi Mel,
I know what it is like to have to get up at
the 6ish a.m. time.
I did it for most of my life, before I had
a major operation which forced me
to have to give up work. I envy you
even though it is hard sometimes, but I
would get up at any time, if I could walk
again- so this might console you a wee
bit.!!!
Take Care.

Hello Mel. I am glad that my comment - which was true - allowed you to look at getting up early a wee bit easier-keep yourself motivated to look at life and the things you have to do in a way that you say each day-"I am lucky to be able to to get up early etc.".
I hope you reap the rewards !!!
Take Care.
Patti.

I get about 6 hours most nights some nights a lot less,i care for my mom bed ridden,alzihimers,stroke,etc...sometimes have to sleep on the geri chair beside her bed,or if i can go into my bed which is late i sleep lightly and keep an ear tuned to the baby monitor, not great though.i nap during the day when i get a chance thats if the doorbell doesnt ring and after the phn has come and gone,or the kids are home from school to keep an eye on her for awhile,i usually sleep about 3 hours straight when i am conscious all is ok.
