Professor McCormick, his registrar Dr John Ryan and all of his team are fantastic. The nurses on St Brigids Ward are amazing and deserve so much respect for how hard they work.

My mother was encouraged to have a procedure done at 86 years of age. We were told that it was a simple procedure and that it would help to prolong her life. She did not want it done and explained that she had a reasonable quality of life and was afraid that if she had the procedure done, this would be effected. We were told that my mother was perfectly healthy and there was no reason why she should not have it done. She had the procedure and two months later died. After the procedure, she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The consultant was not available to see us and sent one of his "team" instead. They said that she was a frail old lady and would not be up to any further treatment. They never said she was a frail old lady prior to the procedure and if they had, she would not have had it done.

While it took a long time to get through to A&E properly, the staff were great and saw to me as quickly as I imagine they could. There was a surplus of patients in the waiting room, which seemed to be the only cause of delay for being seen to. I got moved to a ward sooner than I would have expected and in my few days there, I noticed regular cleaning/changing of beds and the room having a deep clean. I was also relived to find that the kitchen was able to cater for my vegan diet and had no problem doing so. Each member of staff I met did their jobs incredibly well. I got seen to by different types of doctors, nurses, a psychologist and a dietitian. A doctor also followed up on my progress after I left the hospital.

Absolutely appalling congestion waiting, waiting and more waiting - several hours in A&E. It was choked with people, including old dying people beside children, appalling.

86-year-old father admitted to A&E on Monday, spent four days on a trolley and was then discharged without ever making it to a ward. Had no privacy or dignaty. Ended up back in hospital the following day, was admitted and had to receive a blood transfusion. While nursing staff were good, the service is totally unacceptable. Third world service despite good nurses - is this we are reduced to? Definitely a two-tier system.

My mother was admitted with a broken arm and should have been discharged within days, but due to the appalling filth, she contracted the vomiting bug three times and ended up being there for six weeks. She lost two stone in weight and the whole experience was a nightmare.

St Vincents University Hospital has left a very bitter taste in the mouth, it is not a hospital I would ever care to attend again. Found it depressing and the quality of treatment on the wards is variable. It can be good but when it is bad, it is the worst. There is a serious problem here and we are issuing a 20 page letter of complaint regarding same. Our experience is that some of the medical staff continuously got diagnosis and prognosis wrong. They did not know key facts or misinterpreted the facts.

Very confusing where to go on admittance. Found foreign staff intimidating mainly because could not understand what they were saying and worried if you were getting the right medication or they were reading your file. Was shocked to learn the covered smoking area was gone and had to stand outside main entrance in all weathers, including people in wheel chairs, while bombarded with booming repeating automated warnings to clear off from the premises. A nightmare.

My mother was treated very well though often there was not enough staff to deal with her request for pain relief or nausea relief because they were too busy dealing with other patients who should have been in nursing homes. But she had nothing but praise for the care.

You have a large poster in the outpatients waiting room stating how much time & money pts have cost you. there is NO reference to the time & parking costs YOU cost the patients. I waited 4 hrs to be seen in OPD.for all of 2mins, to be told ???... nothing. It is to say the least BAD MANAGEMENT to book 10 + patients in to OPD for the same time.If no one can see this i rest my case.

We couldn't compliment the A&E staff enough. They were thorough, at least 4 tests done within 4 hours - must be a record ! They were so considerate, at a very worrying time for us, the parents.

I have to have a gluten, wheat and dairy free diet and this could not be provided for at all during my stay. Catering staff and nurses didn't understand what this meant. Even if I could eat the food on offer, it was of very poor quality and the smell of it would make me nauseous. The washroom was one big safety hazard. The shower/bath controls were very difficult to use and it was difficult to climb into and not very accessible. There was only a curtain on the bath which meant if you took a shower, the water went all over the floor making it difficult not to fall. The hot tap in the sink was scalding hot while the cold one was ice cold so it was painful to use either. The mattresses and hospital chairs were of poor quality which led to me suffering chronic severe back pain and mild scoliosis kyphosis of the lumbar spine. It baffles me that all hospitals have these same chairs when they are very bad for posture. Otherwise the staff and the medical care were great.

Overall i had a good experience during my stay. However the staff ought to be ashamed of themselves in relation to the dirt of St Monicas ward. Bin in the bathroom overflowing, not empted for days, bathroom been used by visitors. When i arrived down from ICU i was wondering what infection id pick up. The conditions the excellent staff were forced to work in are disgraceful. I was truly shocked.

Doctors, nurses, porters, catering staff-all of them were brilliant, they really understand that in a hospital people need emotional support as well as physical healing.

I wasn't impressed at all by what I hope was a junior doctor who was not at all helpful and indeed was asking inappropriate questions and implying I didn't know what was wrong with my own body despite me having discussed it with the doctor who'd referred me in the first place. So I would say this doctor needs to learn a LOT more about interaction with patients and not be so pass remarkable. The nurse however was much better and it was nice to see the same face as I'd seen before so on that basis I'd go back because I'd hope not to have to encounter that particular doctor, again.

Thanks to all members of multiculueral staff for doing a great job. I am new to Ireland. My only issues were that there was no soap dispenser in one toilet and ladies was still out of order after a week. The lock on the gents' was faulty and looked very unhygienic due to damp wall and pealing paint. Looks disgusting although staff kert it clean. Hinges caused disturbance at night, they need oil. The gully in the shower room was blocked and water was running under the door. They need a laundry basket or notice of what to do with towels/gowns as I removed 10 towels out of domestic bin in shower. First impression of Luke's is shabby, which dose not reflect the actual high standard of cleanliness.

If I had a choice I would never go there again. Their lack of empathy or looking past their own self-interest in some cases is sad to see in a hospital that is supposed to care for the individual patient. It was split down the middle on who was nice and who wasn't however at the end of the day upon complaints being made, as expected nothing came of it. Instead of been updated about the complaint process, I had to go back three times before anything was actually done. Terrible, awful, they blame resources etc...but didn't we learn as children to take responsibility? Perhaps not... just look out for one's own self and that's the way it works.

There are excellent staff in both the MRI department and the breast clinic. The waiting times in the clinic are sometimes long but they always warn you and offer for you to go away to get lunch/coffee and return or call you if you need to return quicker. The MRI staff are so friendly and put you at ease when you are feeling a bit vulnerable/nervous, they talk to you all the way through. I have yearly appointments and they always send them out then text to remind you - a great service as it is easy to forget them, the one time there was a mix up with my appointment it was fixed quickly and efficiently.

My sister was admitted into A and E in December 2010. She had an accident in which she slipped on the ice and hurt herself. We brought her to the A and E Department. We arrived into the A and E department at 5:30pm we were not seen by a triage nurse until 7:30pm. Since it was also the bad weather the waiting area was really cold. Other people that were worse than my sister were waiting for longer periods. My sister had her x-ray around 9pm and she was seen by a doctor at around 10pm. At around 11pm my sister had a lot of pain and she needed pain relief. I contacted the triage nurse and she gave her pain relief. My sister was admitted to the main A and E Department at around 12:30. She was put in a cubicle, there were other patients out on the main floor who had not a cubicle. In my sisters cubicle there were was a needle which had a cover on it on the floor. Some elderly patients who were on trolleys had not any pillows or blankets. Staff were nice. In the morning they had to move my sister out of the cubicle as the cubicle turns into a fracture clinic. They wheeled my sisters trolley and left it beside a bin. Morning staff came in and the nurse looking after my sister asked me to leave as I should not be there. I found this very upsetting and distressful. She told me to come back at 2pm and my sister might be there. I have never seen anything as bad in my life. There was lack of dignity and respect for patients and definite over crowding. The hospital parking was also expensive which was difficult for me to pay. The coffee machine also would not work properly only giving out hot water at times. I would never ever want to be admitted to St. Vincent's hospital on seeing the treatment my sister and other patients got that night.
