Took a child in with a broken leg. All staff really child-friendly. Long queues but being dealt with quickly. Would not fault doctors or nurses. Admin staff a bit snappy and unfriendly and shop staff downright rude!

My relative was an inpatient for three weeks. Because my relative was so frail, family members were allowed to remain with her outside of visiting hours. During this time we all observed the extreme pressures both nursing staff and care staff were under. The ward was always understaffed, putting a lot of pressure on those on duty. They were times when staff from other areas in the hospital helped, but it took so long to hand over care, the ward staff would be under extra pressure. Staff from other areas were thrown in at the deep end and trust me this did not reassure us that staff who were unaware of our relative's needs would be sent in to care for her. They were times where the staff looked exhausted and stressed and it sometimes caused them to be a bit less plesant to relatives who required reassurance. On numerous occasions up to four managerial staff could be seen walking around the ward moving staff here and there. If these managers would get over their own importance they could each have rolled up their sleeves and mucked in and helped out to support already exhausted staff. The staff that cared for my relative were exceptional, except that you knew by looking at their faces that job satisfaction was gone due to ridiculous expectations and pressures put on them.

Clean maternity floor. Great staff. Good food. Hope they get all the support they can from this government in such challenging times.

I had no say in the treatment I was told I was to be given. I was not well informed. I was given the lowest, basic level of information. They also nearly let me leave the hospital without having done the proper tests. They couldn't find any of my information on what I had done or had to have done.

Dr Brassil and his team Patricia and Catherine are willing to take the time to answer any questions big or small, and are so reassuring. All the staff in St Clare's ward and a student nurse were outstanding. I have never experienced such care and attention and great banter and good humour.

It was my first pregnancy and I was admitted with a miscarriage/ectopic. The gynaecologist that I met in A&E and the nurse that took care of me were so kind and professional.

Portiuncula Hospital is the most wonderful hospital for mothers and babies. I have attended it three times and was looked after so well before and after the birth. I went private for the first child and public for the following two. I got excellent care and the breastfeeding service is unbelievably supportive. Thank you to everyone who helped me in that maternity ward. Unfortunately I have moved to Dublin and am scared from what I have read!

Great hospital despite the economic pressures on our hospitals currently. The staff, from reception to ward, are extremely professional. very friendly and helpful making my regular treatments in Portiuncula most comfortable. I truly couldn't say a bad word about them - they're terrific. Noel Gannon

Very unclean hospital. Cleaning staff very bad at their job....even smoking in toilets!! When my two year old was admitted, breastfeeding was frowned upon by nurses..even got lecture about it,saying he should have been weaned before six months. He picked up two stomach bugs while in there...if hospital was clean, this wouldn't have happened.

Breastfeeding support very hit and miss-some staff amazing, others simply appalling. There is literature everywhere promoting breastfeeding but it's very difficult to get anyone to give any actual help. We all know it's the best option for baby but it would be nice if that sentiment extended beyond rhetoric into practical hands-on help.

Mr. Brendan Harding & all his Team. The staff of St. John's Ward - particularly Nurses Michelle, Irene & Carmel. I name them because they are the ones I got to know. All the staff on the ward were brilliant, as were the staff in A.& E. on the night she was admitted. I & all the family will be always grateful for making our mother's final weeks so comfortable.

After waiting months for her appointment for surgery, my mother was told on the day she was to be admitted that there was a mistake made and that no beds were available, therefore she could not go in for surgery. I think this is an absolute disgrace as she had her sister fly back from the states to look after her in the first few weeks after surgery. As it stands the next appointment she can get it weeks away, by which time her sister will have gone back meaning she will have no one to look after her. She also struggled to get the time booked off work, and due to the hospital's errors is now worried the mix up may cause her to lose her job. How hard is it for a hospital to ensure they have a bed they promised, or to find an alternative arrangements when it is their error.

The a&e nurses and nights nurses, catering, cleaning staff of st josephs ward Portiuncula A very caring bunch of women who would constantly check up on my father and myself as I stayed beside his bed for the night and offered tea and food and even a little quiet place to sleep for an hour or two. Their genuine concern and care was just amazing. thank you so much

The only negative point about the hospital was the public restaurant. The food was very bland and very expensive. I know people say this about many hospitals, but if they could improve the quality of food there, I think, in general terms, there would be more customers and increased business for the same restaurant.

I didnt particularly care about a certain nurse in my clinic. I found her very unhelpful, insenstitive and abrupt. She also made it difficult to give me an appointment.

The doctor I saw had no manners and was so old fashion in his views. He did not communicate with either the nurses or patients.

My partner went to A&E on a bank holiday Monday as there was no doctor/dentist available. We spent five hours waiting in A&E to no avail. My partner had an aching jaw due to an abscess on his tooth and just required some antibiotics to ease the infection. My partner asked a nurse, after four hours waiting, when was he going to be seen, and he was abruptly told to look at the list behind her and that they were treating priority cases first. He was fourth on this list at the time. Two patients who came in after us, were seen within 40 mins, and went away without a care in the world. I asked out of curiosity how many doctors were in attendance - I was told there was two. On initial registration at the reception desk, I found the staff member to be very sharp and abrupt and didn't seem at all interested or sympathetic. Horrible experience overall.

This hospital and its staff I found were excellent. In such busy conditions all staff had time to explain things and give such a high standard of care. The only complaint I have is that I had to stay on a trolley for 4 nights and with a back injury and the noise levels because they were so busy I didn't get any sleep or rest. Also there was a problem with dignity issues as men were mixed with women and no screens, but the staff did there best under very trying conditions. When I did get a bed on the ward I was treated so kindly even though they were so busy and when I was allowed to eat I found the meals to be superb. So well presented and the choices fantastic you wouldn't get this quality in some hotels. All the hospital was so clean even though there was so much patient visitor traffic. My consultant was so kind and had patience to explain things and answer my question as did all the doctors I came across. In fact an excellent experience all round. Well done!!!!

Overall the care my father got was very good as I was with him night and day for 8 days. We found Dr Ashard (spelling may not be correct) a lovely patient man and Dr Fahey, a female psychiatric doctor to the elderly, a lady who was very informative and who treated my 90 year old father with kindness dignity and respect. MILE BUIOCHAS DR FAHEY AND NURSES EILEEN AND MARTINA. Good Luck with your wedding Eileen You deserve every happiness and health as my father told the doctor Is fearr na slainte na na tainte - Its better have health than wealth.

Great experience for myself and husband on the birth of our first baby girl. They put us at our ease and all the staff Dr Brassil, midwives and even the staff working in cleaning and food were so professional and friendly. It was an overall positive pleasant experience and I hope we never lose this hospital!!

The waiting-to-be-seen period was very long, due to road accident arriving while waiting and then staff change. it was a long time to wait with children then to be told we had to go to Galway the following morning, but when finally seen, the staff were very nice and apologetic even though it was not their fault.

Currently undergoing maternity care at Portiuncula, very satisfied with service, care and attention to date. Reassuared appropriately about a worrying issue overnight without being made to feel like I was increasing the workload, given a thorough check up and follow up arranged.

I was dealt with efficiently and in a very professional manner, and would recommend this hospital over any "centre of excellance" any day.
