Low sperm count

What options are available to a partner with a low sperm count?

The Doctor says...

The interpretation of a low sperm count is not as simple as you might think. For example a fertile man could have a low sperm count if a period of sexual abstinence did not precede the taking of the sample. High alcohol consumption, tight fitting underpants and hot baths can all affect the sperm count. It is also possible to have a sperm count within the normal range yet a high number of those sperm could be abnormal or possibly immobile. Therefore the quality of the sperm is just as important as the quantity of the sperm. If a low count is obtained the test should be repeated to verify the true status of your partner’s fertility. If the second count is low then the treatment very much depends on the cause. There are many causes of a low sperm count.
