You have epilepsy and you would like not just a job but a career. You want meaningful work that provides a sense of satisfaction and a sense of purpose to your life. Impossible you say.
Why? You have epilepsy.

Despite the fact that there are many people with epilepsy pursuing successful careers, the above reasoning is evident among many young people. Epilepsy can produce many psychosocial barriers:

- Wounded self-esteem.
- Lack of confidence.
- Poor self-image.

A person, who perceives their education as inadequate, very often sees their ability to obtain work in the same light.

Brainwave, The Irish Epilepsy Association has worked to overcome this dilemma by developing a new and unique training strategy. ‘Training For Success’ based in Sligo is a pre-employment training programme, designed to provide young adults with necessary and vital job seeking skills and the confidence to present themselves as employable people.

A wise man once said: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for life".

The general aim of education is to contribute towards the development of all aspects of the individual including; aesthetic, creative, emotional, intellectual and physical development.

Training For Success (TFS)
Participants in TFS are provided with the information and resources to plan and act on their chosen career options. Based on the principles of self-advocacy and personal choice, the trainee begins the process of confidence building through the media of debate and discussion. Trainees are enabled to have a clear idea of where they are heading and to develop a career plan for the future.

Personal Development
Many people with epilepsy experience an underlying damage to confidence and self-image. The roots of this wound are very deep and are caused by many factors. This is linked to a profound sense of powerlessness. This sense of powerlessness is reflected in the actual physical manifestation of epilepsy, in that a seizure is a loss of control, a condition that is random, disruptive and unpredictable.

The training and education of young people with epilepsy must focus on empowerment and enable the individual to break the 'vicious circle' of dependency. For this reason, TFS places great importance on the whole area of personal development.
