Major burden of brain disorders

The projected major increase in the number of people with brain disorders over the next decade will put considerable strain on our health services, according to the Neurological Alliance of Ireland (NAI).

NAI points out that a new HSE report has suggested that over 800,000 people in Ireland could be affected by neurological conditions in 10 years time.

There are currently estimated to be up to 700,000 people living with neurological conditions in Ireland.

According to NAI, the HSE review concludes that conditions like Alzheimer's disease, stroke and Parkinson's disease will rise as our population ages.

Mags Rogers of the NAI says the projected increase will put considerable strain on services already under pressure from long waiting lists, lack of rehabilitation facilities, and personnel shortages at all levels.

She pointed out that Ireland still has the lowest rate of consultant neurologists and rehab specialists in Europe.

The HSE report indicates that we need 42 neurologists around the country instead of the current 20.

The NAI is an umbrella group representing neurological charities.

National Brain Awareness Week will take place from March 10 to 16. The NAI will, during this week, be holding a series of events nationwide.
