Anger at 'Fair City' epilepsy slur Brainwave, the Irish Epilepsy Association, has protested to the Broadcasting Complaints Commission about a scene in a recent epidode of RTE's popular soap opera, Fair City.
The scene consisted of a discussion between two characters, with one describing her mother as 'coming up the stairs, rattling a tray of cups and coming at her like an epileptic.' Brainwave said such a reference was unacceptable. Its CEO Mike Glynn said RTE would not dare to have a character call someone a 'cripple,' or a 'spastic' but feels it can use a similar prejudicial term for people with epilepsy.
