Sufferers from asthma and eczema will benefit from a major sponsorship announced today.

The Asthma Society of Ireland and the Irish Eczema Society are to be supported by the Mattress Doctor, a company specialising in hygienic mattress cleaning.

The Asthma Society, for example, will get a donation from the company for every mattress it cleans. The Eczema Society will receive support for its publications.

Ireland has around half a million asthma sufferers, and the fourth largest rate of children with the condition in the world.

Steven Ekpenyong of the Mattress Doctor pointed out that many asthma and eczema sufferers have symptoms triggered by the house dust mite. He said the company’s cleaning technique can rid bedding of mites and other allergens without use of chemicals.

Allergic conditions are on the rise across the world. European Union research published earlier this month said there are currently 80 million allergy sufferers in the EU, and this is expected to increase to half the Union’s citizens by 2015.
