Have any of you tried Hypnosis to quit smoking? I have a high success rate with smokers.

If there is a "secret" reason for smoking this method usually releases that too and it can be seen just like all of the other "reasons", as no justification to continue.

Hi. I would just like to say that as a female smoker I started smoking when I put my first-born up for adoption. It was an extrememly stressful time for me and I didn't meet too many people to help me out so I turned to cigarettes. I found that they eased the pressure a lot. I also know of another woman who started smoking after her baby died at birth. Maybe these reasons should be explored more.

It's a bit late I know, but I was just reading the mails on women smokers and I have to say 'katieM'
You are very innocent, your immature ideals on why women smoke, seriously?!!! Peer pressure, wanting to look good. Are you mad? Do you have any idea what smoking does to a person's appearance? As a female smoker, I have never once in my life gone' well that model smokes, so .......I'll smoke like mad and make sure my skin gooes to shit from it etc'.... Jesus, if it was that easy to give up, nobody would be smoking!!!

What a bunch of patronising, judges you all are with the exception of Fee and Anonymous Female Smoker.
I'm not surprised Sway that you have a problem with relationships. You fall in love with a person not with an object!
Making judgements on people will get nobody anywhere.

As for Anonymous preaching.. strange how he can't influence his wife but somehow thinks he will influence any of us that smoke.

There are far worse things to be judgemental about rather than smoking.
Try heroin, or cocaine... or are they somehow ok because you don't see the person doing it?

My brother thinks that a beautiful woman smoking who has long legs, long hair, gorgeous clothes with a smell of perfume thrown in, is one of the seven wonders of the world!

I've worked with child care workers, nurses, residential care workers, etc, and many of them smoke. Interestingly, more male staff gave up smoking than female staff. So men have better will power?
As for showing compassion, etc., forget it! I've had to leave parties because of my streaming red eyes (I wear contact lenses), and my clothes smell horrible. I've never smoked and stay away from places where it's very smoky. Fortunately, pubs and restaurants have better ventilation. I've also had relatives die from cancer caused by smoking, and I've worked with the local cancer group.
So if I'm being judgmental - tough!

In reply to the femail smoker who thinks people go on nagging over smoking]From one who smoked for a lot of years , and thankfully got sense and gave them up! My wife smokes and smells like an ashtray , her health is suffering and she is repeatadly sick with chest infections and broncites . She is asmatic and has to use two different types of inhalers , I feel so sorry for her and I get very upset when she is sick, I've pleaded with her to give them up !, but she can't and she wont . So if your tired of the nagging from other people , do yourself a favour healthwise (give them up) or maybe you'll end up the same as my poor wife . [WL]

I am sorry if you found my comment offensive - as I said in my comment I appreciate that it is very difficult to give up smoking so I was not being judgemental. I have a sister who smokes and for health reasons she should not so I am fully aware. Best of luck to all who are endeavouring to kick the habit !

All very interesting comments. I agree with the comments (smoking is not attactive and there are more women smoking nowadays) but less of the extrememly judgemental tone would be helpful. 9 out of 10 smokers would rather not be smoking and have attempted to quit at least once in the past.
Rather than being so judgemental, perhaps you could show friendly support and encouragement to those you know who smoke.
There is nothing worse, for a smoker, than to have to listen to people continually moan in the manner in which most comments thus far were written, as it is extremely hurtful and disheartening - show a little compassion.

I certainly agree that smoking is not attractive and I am female and do not smoke but I disagree with the sexist remark - men and women are equally as unattractive when they smoke and I seem to encounter quite a few males also who still smoke. I don't think it has anything to do with being cool well certainly not when in the thirties or older - I appreciate that it is very difficult to give them up as they are very addictive and lots of people are under the illusion that smoking relaxes the body which unfortunately it really does not.

I totally agree with the original point, alot more women do smoke than men these days, why ? There's nothing worse than seeing a particularly attractive woman and then all of a sudden seeing a noxious cloud of smoke coming from her nose !!! Very off putting.
Out of all my friends, not one male smokes but alot of the women do, and most have taken it up in their very late teens, early twenties.

I think smokers of either sex are equally manky, why does Eamonn find female smokers so much more offensive?

It's a shame that women smokers are on the increase whereas men don't feel the need. Peer pressure including the need to look good, models in magazine are all factors which don't help. I wonder, has the Nico campaign, which seems to be more aimed at women, has had any effect?

There's nothing as ignorant looking as a girl smoking.

I think it's discusting too. I once went to a wedding where the bride smoked, absolutely revolting. How tacky is it? Do people have no idea how ridiculous they look when they smoke, the days when it suposedly looked 'cool' have long gone. Stick to your principles anon and don't go out with a girl who smokes!!!

Is it just my imagination but there seems to be a lot more women smoking in pubs etc these days. Personally I have no problem with people around me smoking, but find it a real turn off to have a girlfriend that smokes, it usually never lasts for that reason.
So has anyone else any ideas on this one
