Joined: - Posts: - # 5 Posted: 19/07/2003 12:32 the levy on cigarette butts is a good idea, but could the proceeds be used to provide free nicotine replacement therapy for those trying to give up. These products are more expensive in some cases than cigarettes, so there is no real incentive for smokers to try them. This would lessen the numbers smoking and would reduce the rubbish from butts. |

However, unless EU Governments agree to take the price of cigarettes out of the CPI, it will be a double edged sword in that it will drive up inflation even further and worsen an already worrying jobs crisis. If it didn't effect the CPI I would recommend a much more punitive levy than a mere 15 cents. |
