Is there financial assistance available for hearing aids?

Yes, there are a number of avenues available to you to help pay for the cost of a hearing aid. These include:

a) Medical card holders

If you are a Medical Card holder, you are entitled to a free hearing aid

b) Social welfare grant

If you do not have a medical card, your hearing aid clinic will put you in touch with suppliers of hearing aids and you will have to pay for your hearing aid yourself.
However, you may get funding for your hearing aid under the Treatment Benefit Scheme operated by the Department of Social and Family Affairs. Qualifying patients and their dependant spouses who have full PRSI cover may get a grant towards the cost of a hearing aid. This would include full contributory pensioners, invalidity pensioners, those on disability benefit and their dependant spouses (conditions apply)
The grant is available to qualifying non-medical card and medical cardholders alike if they obtain a hearing aid privately.

How much can I get towards the cost of a hearing aid?

In the case of one hearing aid being required the grant is 50% of the cost up to a maximum of €760. If two hearing aids are required the maximum grant is 50% of the cost, up to a maximum of €1,520. The grant scheme also covers 50% of the cost of hearing aid repairs and ear-moulds as required.

What are the conditions?

Hearing aids must be provided by suppliers who have a contract with the Department of Social Protection. Full details of the eligibility conditions for the grant may be obtained from the Department website: www.welfare.ie
