"If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world".
J. R. R. Tolkien (1892 - 1973)

Food is one of man's most basic requirements, but its relationship to health is less well understood. In a way, this is curious. It doesn't take any great insight to work out that if you put poor quality fuel into your car, it won't run very well and will soon let you down with a bang.

Yet how many of us pause to consider, as we quaff another burger and fries, washed down with an extra large cola, how our body's own, infinitely more complex engine is running?

This Food for Living Channel, has been designed to offer more in-depth information and insights into the role of food and nutrition generally in our health. The introductory Guide to Nutrition article is extremely comprehensive, and gives a thorough overview of the area. It also focuses on specific topics, such as nutrition for babies and young children, as well as looking at the special nutritional needs of teenagers and the elderly.

We also examine in depth the growing public health threat posed by obesity, while looking north to Finland for a fascinating case study on how one country has dramatically reduced its rate of heart disease and premature death as a result of public health measures centred around food and diet.

Finally, we also take a view of the future of food in the shape of functional foods, including the increasingly popular probiotics and ask what health benefits do they offer. We hope you find this Channel helpful. Bon appetit!
