Training for brain injury care

A series of training programmes has been launched for those caring for people with acquired brain injury (ABI) throughout Ireland.

The training programmes are being organised by Acquired Brain Injury Ireland and funded by Pobal.

There are an estimated 10,000 people in Ireland with a brain injury, many of whom are being cared for in their home by family members.

In order to assist these carers, 16 training programmes are being planned in eight centres throughout Ireland over a two-year period.

The programmes will help carers to better understand ABI and the effects of a brain injury on a person's emotions, behaviour, communication, attention and memory.

Attendees at the training programmes will also learn how to cope with the emotional and psychological aspects of the role of the carer and how ABI can affect the family environment.
