Focus on migraine in women Migraine is three times more common in women than in men, according to the Migraine Association of Ireland.
This year's Migraine Action Week, organised by the Association, will focus on the subject of migraine in women and how the condition can impact on a woman's life. To mark Migraine Action Week, which will be held from September 10 to 16, the Migraine Association has launched a new publication, 'Migraine in Women', a leaflet which is designed to help women understand and manage their migraine more effectively. Susan Lyons, Chairman of the Association, said because migraine can have such a negative effect on quality of life, the onus is on the individual to seek help and assume responsibility for their condition. "Although migraine cannot be cured, it is a manageable and treatable condition", she said. The action week will also coincide with the second European Migraine Day of Action, which will take place on September 12. The Migraine Association of Ireland encourages people with suspected migraine to consult early with their GP. A survey carried out by the Association shows that on average, people do not receive a diagnosis of migraine until six years after they first experience symptoms. The Migraine Association is holding information days in the Greville Arms Hotel, Mullingar, on Sunday September 9 and in the Auburn Lodge Hotel, Ennis on Saturday September 15.
