Toothbrushing could trigger a seizure in vulnerable people, new research suggests.
An article in Neurology, the journal of the American Academy of Neurology, reports an Australian study on adults with epilepsy. Three adults were filmed and studied after they reported having seizures while brushing their teeth.
"The rhythmic act of brushing teeth may excite an already overly excitable area of the brain," said Dr Wendy D'Souza, who led the study.
The scientists believe lesions in a specific part of the brain near hand and speech control areas might be the cause.
Ireland has around 40,000 people with epilepsy.
