‘Winter depression’ does exist. The Irish climate with its short, dark and cold winter days is not very inspiring to most of us. However, there are people who succumb to a form of depression that occurs during the winter months known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
The symptoms of SAD include feeling low, irritable and lacking in energy. Many sufferers over-eat and have no interest in going out. They tend to sleep if they get the chance during the day. We probably all feel a little like this at times! However, with SAD the symptoms are severe enough to prompt sufferers to seek medical help. It may be possible that SAD is caused by a decrease in exposure to natural light. Sometimes light therapy can be beneficial. Other treatment may include counselling and antidepressant medication, if warranted. |
