Question
I am a 30-year-old male currently taking Seroxat for anxiety. I have experienced sleep pattern disturbances and distortions of vision on waking. Are these side effects?
Answer
Seroxat belongs to a class of drugs known as SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). Put simply the net effect of the drug is to increase the level of serotonin in the nervous system. Serotonin imbalance is associated with a number of conditions including depression, depression associated with anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder and panic disorder. Seroxat and other members of the SSRI class have proven to be very effective drugs that are well tolerated by the majority of people for whom they are prescribed. The symptoms you describe have been reported with the use of SSRIs but experience has shown that these effects tend to be transient and have no long-term negative effects. If the effects you are experiencing are intolerable for you then the drug can be changed. However I would suggest that you do not stop your medication but rather have a talk with your doctor and discuss this matter further.
