Exercise may improve your symptoms and quality of life if you are in remission with Crohn’s. It is not known how this occurs.
Finding an exercise you enjoy is likely to help with any stress you may be feeling from your daily life or your disease.
What type of exercise is best?
As Crohn’s is a chronic illness, it is probably best if you exercise in moderation, at least initially. Some people will only be able to exercise a little, but even this is likely to give you some benefits.
Walking and swimming are good forms of exercise where you can go at your own pace.
Talk to your doctor for advice before you start to exercise.
Some people with Crohn’s disease have run marathons; so even feats of extreme physical exertion are not impossible. Medical clearance and special training regimes need to be adopted before you consider such a challenge.
Are there any risks?
Most exercise will probably have to be avoided during flare-ups as there may be associated fever. Mild exercise will probably still be possible. Again, your doctor will be able to guide you on this.
It is important to avoid dehydration, and especially if you have diarrhoea. So drink plenty of water and don’t over-exercise. It is also recommended you don’t get too hot or exercise when the weather is very warm.
