Chronic or long-term constipation
This is a short-term problem, which can usually be traced to a particular cause. The digestive system is very sensitive to life events. Peristaltic movement in the colon can easily be affected by changes in routine. Lifestyle changes, medication, travel or changes in diet can also affect bowel movement. In the case of acute constipation, normal rhythm can be expected to return in a number of days. Sometimes a laxative can help in this process. Chronic or long-term constipation In some people, the constipation does not improve. There are many reasons why this may occur and medical advice is important, particularly if you have constipation that persists for more than a week or comes back after you have treated it. In serious cases, there may be a physical cause like a bowel obstruction in the intestines. Medical advice is essential where there are stomach pains in conjunction with constipation or where blood or mucus appears in the stools. |
