For many people with long-term constipation, no cause can be found. Constipation is an indication that our digestive system is not working properly. Sometimes there may be an illness that is causing constipation and requires treatment by a health professional. However, for many people preventive measures may be useful. Regular exercise, a balanced diet that includes fibre and a regular bowel habit are important components in good digestive health. This applies to both young and old. These measures should be adopted by as many as possible to whatever extent as can be achieved. They are part of leading a healthy lifestyle which has many health benefits, including helping the digestion process.
Drink lots of water (8-10 glasses a day). Juices like prune and plum juice can be beneficial. If our water consumption is inadequate, the body can respond by extracting more water from the contents of the colon. This can reduce the frequency of bowel movements and make the stools hard and dry and more difficult to pass. However, while lots of water aids good digestion, drinking more water may not relieve the symptoms of constipation once it occurs. Sensible eating promotes healthy digestion. A diet high in fibre can be achieved by increasing consumption of whole grains, bran, fruit and vegetables. White bread, cakes and sugars should be avoided where possible. Too much fibre can be a problem in severe constipation. A regular bowel habit is important. After breakfast is a good time. Ideally, visits to the toilet should not be rushed but on the other hand, straining is not recommended. Exercise is important for health through all age groups. Children should be encouraged to be physically active and discouraged from long stints playing computer games and watching TV. Regular exercise improves circulation, firms muscles, moves joints and helps you remain flexible and supple. Walking and swimming is particularly good for older people. Anyone who has been inactive for a long period should seek medical advice about what exercise is suitable for them. | ||||||||||||||||||
