Text to save a life campaign The Irish Kidney Association is appealing to the public to register as an organ donor by sending a freetext with the word DONOR to the number 50050.
The move is aimed at encouraging younger people to think about organ donation and to talk to their family and friends about the organ donation in the event of their death.
According to the Irish Kidney Association, last year 224 organ transplants took place in Irish hospitals but the demand for organs still greatly outnumbers suitable donors available.
The IKA, in association with Astellas Pharma, is also organising a Run for A Life event tomorrow, September 12 in Blessington, Co.Wicklow.
This is a sports event in aid of the organ transplant units at Beaumont, the Mater and St Vincent's Hospitals.
Those interested in taking part in the run, walk or cycle at Run for a Life can register online here
