Heart failure unit opens at Beaumont

A new purpose built Heart Failure Unit at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin was officially opened yesterday by Áine Brady, Minister for Older People and Health Promotion.

The new unit will house the heart failure service, which has been in place in the hospital for two years. Minister Brady welcomed the fact that the service has dramatically reduced re-admission rates for patients attending it within this period.

“It is testament to the work of the staff in this service that within the first year re-admission rates were reduced by 81%, and only 12 % of patients were re-admitted in the second year,” said Minister Brady.

The Minister highlighted further benefits of the service, stating that patients and families have also reported improvements in their quality of life, improvements in their abilities to self-manage the condition within the community setting, and improvements in adherence to treatment.
