A spacer device is a see-through plastic container, usually with two halves that click together. An inhaler is attached to one end of the spacer device and the person breathes the medicine through a mouthpiece at the other end. There are several brands of spacer. These are available from pharmacies on prescription.

Spacers are very useful in children who are too young to learn inhaler technique. They are also useful to give multiple doses of reliever medicine in an acute asthma episode.

Spacers are important for a number of reasons:
They make aerosol inhalers easier to use and more effective.
More medicine is inhaled into the lungs.
The medicine is trapped inside the spacer so the only action needed is to breathe the medicine in.
They are a convenient and compact alternative to a nebuliser. Spacers work as well as nebulisers.
