I recently (5 weeks ago) broke my fibula and at my last appointment my doctor said it wasn't healing as fast as it could be, although some new bone was forming. I'm 25 yrs old. Is there any benefit in increasing my calcium level in the short term, ie more milk or supplements? Would this speed up healing and recovery?
I donít think that increasing calcium consumption would accelerate bone healing in your case unless you were eating a diet that was deficient in calcium. This would be a very difficult thing to do unless you had a very unbalanced diet. The doctor has said that the bone was not healing as fast as it could be however his crucial observation was that new born was forming. It can take up to 10 to 12 weeks for a fracture of the fibula to heal so you may well find that bone healing has accelerated when you are next reviewed.
