Cholesterol testing

When going for a cholesterol test is it necessary to be fasting?

When you are having a blood test to measure your cholesterol level the triglycerides are also usually measured. It can be argued that you donít have to fast before a cholesterol measurement but you must fast in order to obtain an accurate measurement of the triglycerides. It is generally advised that you fast from your evening meal of the night before the test. Fifteen hours is the generally recommended time frame. The reason for fasting is to ensure that the result obtained is a true measurement of the cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood. If you had a full Irish breakfast on the morning of the test the result could be misleading.
