Sponge kidney

Can you tell me what is sponge kidney????

Sponge kidney is so called because the affected kidney looks and feels like a sponge. The condition does not give rise to any symptoms and kidney function may not be impaired. It is a congenital condition. The sponge-like consistency of the kidney is due to multiple small cysts in the small collecting tubes. These tubes in turn funnel into the tubular system that merges into the ureter which is the tube connecting the kidney to the bladder. It can be associated with other medical conditions but sponge kidney itself is not of functional significance.
