Medical Q&As

Flying and pregnancy

I plan to fly to the UK while 8 weeks pregnant. Are there any risks involved with this? This is my third child and no problems with previous two or with this pregnancy so far.

There are no risks involved in a short haul flight at this stage of your pregnancy. Airlines do prohibit pregnant women from long haul flights from approximately 28 weeks onwards and also prohibit pregnant women from short haul flights in the final six weeks. Given the emerging data on so called “economy class” syndrome (leg clots and associated pulmonary embolism) it is probably not advisable for any heavily pregnant woman to fly during the third trimester of her pregnancy.
