Alzheimer’s – planning ahead

A member of our family has Alzheimer’s and we are starting to plan for the future. We are wondering who will provide medical care and what alternatives are available?

Routine medical care is provided by GPs. Most people with Alzheimer’s disease can develop the same medical problems that older people do and are no different in that regard. Specialist advice on behavioural and psychological symptoms, should they develop, can be sought from old age psychiatrists. Dementia specific services such as day care and respite care are available through the voluntary agencies such as the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland but are not as widely available as they should be. Day care and respite care can also be accessed through the generic elderly services but many times these are not suitable for people with severe memory loss and behavioural and psychological symptoms so there are considerable gaps in the services for these types of patients.
