Miscarriage - safe to conceive?

I had a miscarriage recently. I would like to try to get pregnant again as soon as possible. Should I wait for longer? Are the chances of having a second miscarriage heightened by not waiting? I feel ready to try again.

Unfortunately miscarriage is a common event but if you have only experienced one miscarriage your risk of experiencing another is not significantly greater than it would be for a woman who has never had a miscarriage. Also, there is no evidence that you are at increased risk of miscarriage by becoming pregnant soon after your first miscarriage. However, the general advice is that a woman should defer conception for at least a couple of cycles after a miscarriage in order to ensure that she is psychologically and emotionally recovered from the loss. But that is only a generalisation and people vary greatly in their response to miscarriage. If you feel well both physically and emotionally after your miscarriage there is no hard scientific evidence to suggest that you ought to defer becoming pregnant. One additional consideration is that smoking increases the risk of miscarriage. It has been estimated that women who smoke more than 10 cigarettes per day are twice as likely to miscarry irrespective of their age or level of alcohol consumption. Therefore if you are a smoker you would be well advised to give up cigarettes.
