Nappy rash

My baby seems to have bad nappy rash. Any suggestions? I have tried various creams and powders without much success.

Nappy rash is caused by irritation of the skin with ammonia products that are present in the urine. It is sometimes necessary to leave nappies off for a few days in order for the rash to clear up. If nappy rash persists unduly this suggests the possibility that the rash may have become infected either with bacteria or a fungus. As a general rule if the skin creases around the bottom and genitalia are red this raises the possibility of infection. A straightforward uninfected nappy rash generally spares the skin creases. If the rash is infected a prescription cream may be needed to eradicate it.
