Sperm count - low due to hernia repair?

My wife and I have been trying to have a baby for some time now without success. I had a hernia repair when I was a baby and I wonder if that could have any bearing on my sperm count?

I assume that the hernia repair that you are referring to was an inguinal hernia. Sperm travel from the testicles to the penis through a tube known as the vas deferens and it is possible for that tube to be accidentally injured during a hernia repair. However, in order for that operation to affect fertility the vas from each testicle would need to be damaged. The chances of that happening on both sides would be extremely remote. If you have any concerns about your sperm count that issue could be resolved by having a sample of your semen analysed in the laboratory. Semen analysis would indicate if your sperm count was adequate and would also reveal if the sperm were healthy and mobile.
