Fungal nail infection

Is a fungal infection of the finger nail contagious?

A fungal infection is caused by an infectious agent therefore there is the theoretical possibility that it could spread between people. However in practice this tends not to happen. It would be unusual to see several members of the one family presenting with fungal nail infections. However an affected individual might have infection on several different nails. In other words it can spread on an individual but does not usually spread between individuals.
