Medical Q&As

The pill - am I protected yet?

I took the “morning after pill” a week and a half ago and wanted to go back on the pill. I was told to start it on the first day of my next period. I thought I was getting my period a week early so I started taking it but it only lasted a day. Am I now protected or not? Will I get a regular period at the normal time?

You are protected so there is no need for you to be worried. It is possible that you will experience a breakthrough bleed midway through the first packet of the pill but you should continue taking the pill without interruption. Breakthrough bleeding is a very common experience and generally amounts to no more than minor spotting. Your contraceptive pill is still effective despite the spotting. You should then have a period during your pill free interval. Periods tend to be lighter when you are taking the contraceptive pill.
