Medical Q&As

Prolactin level high - why?

I have a high prolactin level. A pituitary tumour has been ruled out. Also I am not on any medication. What are the other causes for a high prolactin level?

Prolactin is a hormone that is secreted by the pituitary gland. It is the hormone that is responsible for preparing a woman’s breasts for lactation or milk production. Your question refers to a pituitary tumour and medication, both of which can give rise to high prolactin levels. The list of medications that can elevate prolactin includes certain types of blood pressure medication, antidepressants and painkillers. Alcohol can also elevate prolactin levels and hallucinogenic drugs have also been reported as having the same effect. In some cases hypothyroidism or an under-active thyroid gland may be responsible.
