Medical Q&As

Stopped the pill - no periods yet?

I came off the pill in March and haven't had a period since then. I have done two pregnancy tests and they were both negative. Is this normal?

It is very common for some delay to occur in the resumption of periods after stopping the pill. Since you have only stopped the pill as recently as March it would be reasonable to do nothing for the moment and wait and see if the periods return spontaneously. It is also worth noting that sometimes the pill can be mistakenly blamed for such delays when in fact the pill was simply masking an underlying period irregularity rather than actually causing it. If your periods fail to return over the coming months you should visit your GP who can perform a series of investigations to establish if an abnormality exists. Such investigations would include hormone tests and an ultrasound examination of the ovaries.
