Medical Q&As

Semen - blood present?

I am a 47-year-old male and recently discovered my semen was discoloured a dark red colour. What could be wrong?

It sounds as if you have blood in your semen. The medical name for this is haemospermadia. This can happen as a result of bleeding at any point along the male reproductive tract extending back from the urethra to the testicles and epididymis and also including the prostate gland. The bleeding can occur as a result of inflammation, infection, obstruction or even trauma. Prostatis or inflammation of the prostate gland is a common cause of such bleeding in middle aged and older men. I would suggest that you visit your GP in order to have this matter properly assessed.
