Medical Q&As

Psoriasis - scalp treatment?

I suffer from psoriasis of my scalp and elbows. My grandmother also suffered from this but got cured with a medicine called oxipor. I tried to get this in Ireland but failed to get it. I have since been able to acquire it in the U.S.A. Have you ever come across this medicine and is there any reason why I should not try this?

I have never heard of the product called oxipor but there are several similar products available over the counter in Ireland. Oxipor is a distillate of coal tar that contains 5% coal tar in a liquid base. Coal tar based products help to reduce the rapid turnover of skin cells that lead to the formation of the thick dandruff that we associate with scalp psoriasis. Such products also reduce itching of the skin. I should also enter a cautionary note that tar based products may discolour blonde, grey and bleached hair. If you print off this reply and bring it to your local pharmacy the pharmacist will be able to provide you with an equivalent product. Essentially you are looking for a product containing a 5% dilution of coal tar in a liquid base.
