I have a painless red lump inside my lower right eyelid. It has been there for 4 weeks and has got no bigger or smaller. What can I do about this?
The red lump you describe is a form of internal stye and is also known as a Meibomian cyst. The Meibomian glands are located at the base of the tiny pores lining the inner surface of the eyelids. Just like regular skin pores these pores can also get blocked. The Meibomian gland continues to produce its secretions but the substance damns up in the pore because it cannot be released due to the blockage. If it persists the only effective cure is to have the cyst removed under local anaesthetic. This is an outpatient procedure and does not result in a scar because the cyst is removed from the inner surface of the eyelid.
