Yoghurt - safe during pregnancy?

Are yoghurt drinks safe to drink during pregnancy?

Yoghurt drinks contain bacteria, which are absolutely harmless to the expectant mother and her unborn child therefore you have no need to worry. The bacteria used in the production of yoghurt are usually from the lactobacillus species, which colonise the gut and are not absorbed into the bloodstream. I may be mistaken but I think that your concern is based on a fear of listeriosis, which is indeed a potential threat to the unborn child. The harmful bacterium that causes listeriosis is called listeria and it can travel through the motherís bloodstream thereby infecting the baby. Listeria can be acquired from unpasteurised cheese, particularly soft cheeses such as feta, brie, mozzarella, camembert and various blue cheeses. However, I stress that I am referring here to unpasteurised cheeses. Pasteurised cheese is safe! Hard cheeses such as cheddar are also safe.
