Groin rash - what could it be?

My boyfriend seems to itch his genital area a lot and I have noticed a raised pinkish area around his genital region and inner upper thigh. The rash does not extend to his genitalia. It seems to start beside his penis and continue down both legs by about 4 inches. I have no symptoms. What could be wrong?

This is a fungal infection of the skin. The rash can extend from the crease between the inner thigh and pelvis, over the other inner thigh and underneath into the anal region. The genitalia are usually not affected. There are no sexual implications with this condition therefore you have no need to be worried. The condition occurs when the groin becomes sweaty, which permits an excessive growth of skin fungi. It is easily treated with an antifungal cream. There are a number of measures that help to prevent recurrence: 1. wear loose fitting cotton underwear. 2. avoid wearing tight fitting synthetic clothing that causes perspiration and does not allow perspiration to evaporate. 3. bathe or shower after any physical activity that induces sweating. 4. launder sweat impregnated clothes after a work out or physical labour and donít leave them in a kit bag, which would simply allow the fungus to flourish in the clothing ready to re-infect the skin next time the clothes are worn.
