Undescended testicle - surgery?

My son is 4 years old and will be undergoing an operation to bring one of his testicles back down to his scrotum. I was wondering what this operation involves and how long it will take him to recover afterwards?

The procedure for correcting failure of descent of the testicle is called an orchidopexy and it is performed under a general anaesthetic. It is a relatively straightforward operation that involves making a small incision in the groin area. The testicle is located and is gently drawn down from the inguinal canal and placed in the scrotum. The base of the testicle is then attached to the inside of the scrotum in order to keep the testicle down in the scrotum. The procedure takes approximately one hour. Many of these cases can be dealt with as a hospital day case and do not require an overnight stay in hospital. Postoperative pain is adequately relieved by paracetamol or ibuprofen based syrups and most boys are fully active and pain free within days.
