Mumps related deafness

I had mumps when I was 8 yrs and as a result lost the hearing in my left ear. At the time I went to a specialist (20 yrs ago) he said there was nothing that could be done as the nerve was damaged. Do you know if this is still the case or is there any point in returning to a hearing specialist?

I donít claim to be an expert in such matters but I am not aware of any treatments that would restore your hearing. The various aids to hearing rely on the presence of an intact and functioning acoustic nerve. If that nerve is damaged it has very little power of recovery and the resulting deafness is usually permanent. Presumably over the past twenty years your right ear has compensated for the loss of hearing on the left side. If your hearing were not as good of late as it used to be then specialist assessment would be sensible.
