Laboratory testing - quality control?

When a doctor takes a blood sample for testing, where is it tested? If this is done by an independent body or by the hospital how accurate are the results?

The majority of blood tests requested by GPs are performed in the laboratories attached to the nearest hospital to the practice. Some special tests might have to be sent to specialised laboratories such as the National Virus Reference Laboratory in UCD. Quality control standards in Irish hospital laboratories measure up to best international standards and I have never had reason to question the validity of test results over the past twenty years.
