High blood pressure - salt restriction?
I have given up salt as I have high blood pressure. Should I cut it out completely?
Salt or sodium chloride can have a marginal effect on high blood pressure. It is probably not necessary to exclude it completely from the diet and besides a diet totally lacking in added salt would be less palatable. Salt is a flavour enhancer and adds to the enjoyment of our food. As a general rule of thumb if you were to restrict salt intake it would be reasonable not to add it to food at the table yet to continue using it to season food when a dish is being prepared. There are several “low salt” preparations available in the supermarket if you cannot abide eating your food without adding salt at the table. It is not necessary to cut out salt completely.
